Emotional development

The importance of social and emotional development is seen in every area of a child's life. A child will have a strong foundation for later development if he or she can manage personal feelings, understand others' feelings and needs, and interact positively with others.

Teaching children about emotions

Communication

The ability to communicate our wants and needs is one of the life's most fundamental activities. Communication consist of the exchange of information between a sender and a receiver. It is a two-way road—the sender and receiver are both essential for communication to take place. For effective communication, the sender and receiver each needs to understand the message being communicated and the method being used to communicate.
All kids communicate, but some kids with visual, hearing or other impairments may not use spoken or written language. However, a variety of communication approaches and systems may be appropriate for your child who has disabilities. These range from gestures to manual signs, to systems using pictures, objects, or symbols, to technological devices—or to combinations of all these methods.

Speech and Language

What is language?

Language is the code we use to comprehend and communicate our thoughts as well as to express our needs. Speech is the spoken form of our language. Children hear language by listening and then practising what they hear. They do not acquire language at exactly the same speed. They absorb language in stages, over time, not all at once.

You can use these tips to help your child to develop language skills:

*Use labels, words and picture to name areas in the room
*Encourage communication attempts when the child is trying to communicate (their gestures, vocalisation etc.)
*Speak slowly and face the child when speaking
*Be a good speech model
*Praise the child for an effort
*Storybooks are great!

Check regularly if the child is required different types of communication.
